Minister of Energy and Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation of Sri Lanka, Hon. Anura Karunathilake, participated in the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition (IECE) 2026, held in New Delhi from 6 - 7 August 2026.
The conference, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), brought together policymakers, industry leaders, investors and experts to discuss energy security, the energy transition, renewable energy, technology, manufacturing and the development of resilient energy systems.
Minister Karunathilake delivered a Special Address on “Beyond Borders: The Future of Shared Energy Systems”, focusing on cross-border energy cooperation, interconnected grids, strategic reserves, financing, regulation and regional energy security.
On the sidelines of the conference, Minister Karunathilake held a number of meetings with his counterparts, policymakers and representatives of the energy sector.
During his meeting with Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, the two sides reviewed ongoing India - Sri Lanka cooperation in the power sector. Discussions included the proposed India - Sri Lanka HVDC power interconnection and the Sampur Solar Power Project, as well as opportunities to expand cooperation in cross-border electricity trade, renewable energy, transmission infrastructure and capacity building.
Minister Karunathilake also met Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, during which discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector and identifying opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships between the two countries.
During the IECE 2026, the Minister further met with the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Bhutan, Lyonpo Gem Tshering, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy of Madhya Pradesh, and the Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, as well as senior representatives of the National Thermal Power Corporation.
Minister Karunathilake visited energy-sector manufacturing facilities in Noida and Greater Noida, including a solar module manufacturing facility of Jakson Group and a smart-meter manufacturing facility of Kimbal Mega Plant. The Minister Karunathilake also visited the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) in New Delhi.
The visits provided an opportunity to gain first-hand insight into India's capabilities in renewable-energy manufacturing, smart metering and energy technologies. The Minister’s engagements in New Delhi highlighted the breadth of opportunities for cooperation between Sri Lanka and India in renewable energy, power generation and transmission, cross-border electricity, smart energy technologies and hydrocarbons, while providing an important platform for Sri Lanka to engage with Indian policymakers and the private sector on the rapidly evolving regional energy landscape.
