India-Sri Lanka Cultural Partnership
India and Sri Lanka share a profound cultural partnership rooted in over 2,500 years of historical, religious, and linguistic ties, particularly through Buddhism and shared heritage.
Historical Foundations
The partnership traces back to ancient exchanges, including the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka from India and centuries of trade, migration, and spiritual connections. This legacy forms the bedrock of modern people-to-people ties.
Key Agreements
A pivotal Cultural Cooperation Agreement, signed in 1977, underpins regular exchange programs in arts, music, and education between the two nations.
Active Institutions
The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Colombo promotes Indian culture through classes in dance (Bharatanatyam, Kathak), music, Hindi, and yoga, while organizing festivals and scholarships via the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. The India-Sri Lanka Foundation, established in 1998, fosters youth exchanges and civil society collaboration in science, education, and culture.
Recent Initiatives
Ongoing efforts include joint Buddhist heritage projects, such as relic exhibitions and monastery restorations, alongside tourism promotion to deepen mutual understanding.
