India-Sri Lanka Academic Ties

India and Sri Lanka share a vibrant academic partnership, rooted in our common cultural heritage and dedication to educational exchange. This collaboration advances knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and people-to-people connections through scholarships, joint programs, and institutional ties.

Scholarship Programs

India offers generous scholarships to Sri Lankan students through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), including SAARC schemes that support undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies across diverse disciplines (excluding medicine). Around 60 scholarships are granted annually, complemented by fellowships that have empowered thousands of Sri Lankans to pursue excellence at leading Indian institutions like the IITs and top universities.

The India-Sri Lanka Knowledge Initiative, launched in 2010, bolsters these bonds by fostering university linkages and establishing centers such as the Centre for Contemporary Indian Studies at the University of Colombo.

Institutional and Training Initiatives

Landmark projects include the Sri Lanka-India Centre for English Language Training (SLICELT) in Kandy, affiliated with India's English and Foreign Languages University, which enhances teacher training and language skills. Recent milestones feature a multi-ethnic trilingual school in Sri Lanka—funded by India with over LKR 320 million—that promotes education in Sinhala, Tamil, and English to advance national reconciliation.

India further extends support through over 100 annual ITEC training slots, Hindi chairs at universities like Sabaragamuwa, distance Hindi courses via the Open University of Sri Lanka, and education fairs highlighting opportunities at IIT Madras and IIM Bangalore.

Emerging Collaborations

Forward-looking efforts focus on alumni networks (e.g., Delhi University), campus extensions of premier Indian institutions like IITs and JNU, access to SWAYAM MOOCs, and credit-sharing aligned with India's National Education Policy. These initiatives, spotlighted during high-level visits such as Sri Lankan Prime Minister in 2025, underscore education's role as a bridge of trust amid Sri Lanka's economic recovery.
